In Spite of the Bosset Life(18)
“Where’s Aqua?” I asked, referring to my two year old niece.
“With Sebastian.” Nola dried her hands and studied me. “What’s wrong best friend? Your eyes are red and you don’t never ignore my calls. What happened with you and Abir?” His name alone sent chills through my body. I got sick to my stomach and thought I would vomit.
“TeTe Noah, TeTe Noah,” said Majesty, running to Nola. I thought it was so cute how she said Nola. Nola picked her niece up and kissed her face. “Where Waha?” asked Majesty, talking about Aqua. She couldn’t get Aqua’s name right either. I smiled and just looked at my baby. I had been working with her constantly to pronounce her words right.
“With Unc Unc,” said Nola, putting Majesty down. “Why won’t you go play in your room. Me and your mother need to talk.” We both watched Majesty run up the stairs. “So, what’s up? I know something happened.”
“I don’t want to talk about it Nola,” I said at the stove. I wiped my eyes because I was crying.
“You want to cry about it then?” Nola gave me a hug that I desperately needed. “That’s fine. We can cry. I love you and only want the best for you… what happened between you and Abir? Did he hit you?” I wiped my tears and tried to get myself together.
“He came to my office today.” I stopped and let the tears fall.
“And what happened? What did he do? He called steady asking about you and saying he was sorry. I was confused and Sebastian went looking for him for a minute. Sebastian came back with no luck and I decided to come check up on you.”
“He said he wanted to talk. The conversation elevated and he just flipped. Like, he just f*cking flipped! He started grabbing me and trying to kiss-,”
“He tried to have sex with you?” Nola hugged me tight and I dropped the oven mitt on the floor. “Ohh no, friend. I’m so sorry this happened to you. I feel so bad. Like, I introduced you to him. He never made it seem like he would do this,” said Nola, blaming herself.
“Well, he did. Akamai stopped the assault before it went too far. I left the office and picked my daughter up from school. I promise, I don’t want to see him ever again.”
“Sebastian is going to flip.”
“Promise me you’re not going to tell Sebastian. He’s going to kill Abir if he finds out. I don’t want you guys getting tied up in my mess. I just want to get over it, just like I got over everything else,” I said, meaning every word. I wasn’t going to the police or anything. I just wanted to forget today ever happened. Tomorrow, I had to go see my probation officer and I just felt drained.
“Koì, you can’t run from this. Abir needs to pay. That’s my brother in law but you don’t act that way. Sebastian’s family don’t play that. When Sebastian put his hands on me years ago, his father almost killed him. They have rules in their family that you have to obey. That’s probably why no one can find his ass. He think you already told.”
“I should’ve never been so vulnerable towards him. I let him around my daughter. She calls him Uncle for goodness sake. I can’t believe I was so stupid!”
“Don’t blame yourself. Abir played the nice guy role and wasn’t so nice. Hell, I didn’t think he would act in this manner. But at the same time, I never saw him with a woman that he admired more than you. Some devils look like regular people nowadays. They walk this earth just like us,” said Nola, speaking the truth. Nola and I changed the conversation and she helped me cook. Kash was coming for dinner as well, so I made sure I cooked his favorites. I knew the kids were going to be happy once they smelt that good N’awlins cooking.
“I think that’s my kids right there. Can you go get Majesty? I know she driving Unni crazy up dere,” I said, taking off my apron.
“No problem,” said Nola, taking off her heels before going upstairs. I got to the door as soon as Akamai had opened it. Kori wasn’t no little teenager no more. She was nineteen and more like a lady now. I was so happy to see the woman she was growing into. My little sister was beautiful and had a shape identical to mines.
“Hey Sis! Where my niecey pooh?” We hugged and I let her in the house. Kash swaggered his way in the house.
“Hey Babyboy,” I said, calling him the same name Momma Dukes used to call Ace.
“Hey momma,” said Kash, kissing my cheek. He looked just like his daddy in the face. He had on some joggers and crisp white Forces. He had bags in his hands too.
“Who these for? I hope me,” I said, eyeing the Gucci, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, and Fendi bags.
“I hope at least one for me too,” said Kori, swinging her hair. She wore the hair by Kitkat well.
“Me three,” said Nola, coming down the steps. Kori rushed to Nola because she had Majesty in her arms.
“Me four,” said Majesty, cheering. We all bust out laughing.
“I got something for everybody, how about that,” said Kash, kissing his little sister. He was so good with Majesty. I never thought he would be this great of a brother. Since Ace was gone, he really made sure Majesty got all the attention he could give.
Kash was running the streets a lot, so I didn’t get to see my son on a day to day basis. That didn’t mean he was a bad big brother. We did talk on the phone a lot. He always was near and looked out for his sister. I had to respect him for that. When he gets locked up, I’m the one who comes to rescue him every time.
