Only Mine (Honey Mountain #5)(48)
“I don’t need to brush up on my skills. I’m an impressive lover, if I do say so myself.”
I barked out a laugh, and the corners of her mouth turned up.
“What?”
“I like the sound of your laugh.” She shrugged. “It’s so much better than the sound of your voice.”
I chuckled and nipped at her mouth because she was such a smart-ass.
But I liked it.
Maybe a little too much.

We’d grabbed a bottle of wine, and I pulled together a little charcuterie board, and we sat down on the couch.
“So, I know you agreed to watch me pack, but there’s another thing I do every night that you’ll have to sit through, as well.” I piled some cheese on a cracker with a piece of salami and took a bite.
“Please tell me that it involves you stripping naked.”
“Well, that would be weird, because I talk to my dad every night when I get home from work. So, there is no stripping down.”
“That’s cool. You’re really close, huh?”
“Yeah. He’s the best.” I reached for my wine. “Is that going to freak you out? If I FaceTime him really quick with you here?”
He smirked. “The other night when we kissed, I’ll admit, I freaked out a little. I just didn’t know what it meant, and with us working together, I didn’t want to complicate things unnecessarily.”
I rolled my eyes. “Listen. I’m the last girl you need to worry about. I will not be falling in love with you, Wolf Wayburn. Hell, I can barely stand you most of the time. So, you have nothing to be concerned about. It’s an attraction. We’re acting on it. We spend a lot of time together. It’ll fizzle out in no time, and we’ll pretend it never happened. Deal?”
“Jesus. Are you always this—honest?”
“Yes. Always.”
“I can’t be that bad if you were willing to give me the world’s best blow job.”
I laughed. I’d told him the truth about that. I’d never liked the idea of getting on my knees for anyone. After trying it that one time for Matt Richards, I’d realized it would take a very special penis to get me to do it again.
And Wolf had been worth the wait.
I’d actually enjoyed it, which is how I think it was supposed to be.
At least, according to my blow job research.
So, there you go. You should learn something from every relationship that you have. No matter how short or how long. I preferred short most of the time, but this one had already lasted longer than most, and we didn’t even have an actual relationship.
But whatever this was—I was good with taking it to the next level.
Then we’d get tired and bored and go our separate ways.
“You’re not all bad.” I reached for my wine.
“Call your dad. I can go sit in that chair so that he won’t see me if you don’t want him to.”
“No. He knows about you.”
His eyes widened. “What did you tell him?”
“Mostly all bad stuff. Like I said, I’m honest to a fault.”
He shook his head, and he looked so damn sexy that thoughts of what was coming tonight had me buzzing a little.
“Please tell me you didn’t tell him about the two vaginas?” He winced.
“I spared him the gory details. I just said you’re usually a pompous ass but that you’re funny and smart and were probably an amazing Navy SEAL because you’re a hard worker and very disciplined.”
“Careful, Minx. It almost sounds like you’re falling for me.”
“Never going to happen. I learned at a young age to stay away from the big, bad Wolf.” I dialed my father and leaned back against the couch, and Wolf did the same.
“Hey, Dilly,” he said, as he sat at the table at the firehouse.
“Hi, Dad. I thought you were off tonight?”
“Rusty’s not feeling well, so I came in. Are you going to tell me who the large man sitting beside you is? Or are we pretending like he isn’t there?”
Wolf barked out a laugh. “Well, I see where she gets her sense of humor.”
“This is Wolf. The overbearing, pompous ass of a boss that I kind of work for.”
“I’m not her boss. We work together.”
“I thought your name was on my paycheck?” I raised a brow.
“It’s my father’s name. I was just showing off.”
Now, it was my dad’s turn to laugh. “So, what’s this? Some kind of truce for the night?”
“I told you we’re sometimes friends.” I smiled as Wolf’s cheek almost touched mine as we both tried to fit in the screen.
“It just takes my girl a few months to warm up to newcomers. She’s always been cautious.”
“That’s not a bad thing,” Wolf said.
“Well, don’t go acting like you’re nice in front of my dad and making me look like I exaggerated how awful you are.”
“I’ll try to live up to your very low expectations of me,” Wolf said.
“So, you were a SEAL, huh?” my father asked.
“Yes, Sir. I spent the last ten years in that profession, and it was time to go.”
