Unbreakable(31)
“I started to walk to your house last night, but the storm was too bad,” she replies.
“Yeah right. More like you were too busy f*cking your ‘friend’ here to even remember that you were supposed to meet up with me.”
That does it. I’m done with this prick. I yank Crew Cut toward me by the collar of his t-shirt and give him a few shakes. “You don’t ever talk to her like that. Ever. Do you understand me? I’ll f*cking end you.”
Emmy pales as she attempts to pry my fingers from Crew Cut’s t-shirt. “Will! Let him go. Please.”
I give Crew Cut another shake for good measure then slowly loosen my grip. When he’s finally free, he actually has the balls to give me a triumphant smile. Emmy steps in front of me and jabs him in the chest with her finger.
“I should have just let him f*ck you up,” she snaps.
Crew Cut opens his mouth to respond, but Emmy cuts him off.
“You disgust me, Jackson. You could have come to check on me if you were so worried. You weren’t worried. You were just pissed off you didn’t get laid.”
She walks him backward out of the front door. “Newsflash: that was never going to happen. I don’t sleep with guys who make hand-job gestures behind my back. Have a nice life.”
She slams the door in his face and turns, sagging against it.
“Pretty impressive,” I grin.
“He’s an *,” she mutters, walking back into the living room. “Would you really have f*cked him up?”
“You even have to ask? I wasn’t about to let Crew Cut talk to you like that. But you handled it.”
She glances over her shoulder at me, one eyebrow cocked in amusement. “Wait… Crew Cut?”
“It fits, eh?”
Emmy laughs, and it’s the sweetest sound. I slip my arms around her from behind and press a kiss against her ear. “Do me a favor, Sunshine?”
She shivers. “Mmm. Keep doing that and I’ll do you more than one, Mav.”
Oh, f*ck. I can think of a few things I’d love for her to do to me. But I need her to clear out so I can get things together for the surprise I have planned.
I’m not sure what it is about Emmy, but I love making her happy. And I know she’s going to love this little lunchtime getaway.
“Would you go to the store and grab a few things we need? I have some stuff I have to do around here before kicking off the rest of this day.”
“Okay. You don’t mind if I take the truck?”
“Of course not.” I walk over to the fridge and write down a few items on a sticky note.
“Milk, eggs, cinnamon sticks, and condoms.” I wink. “I underlined that last one. It’s the most important.”
“It should’ve been first on the list,” she says saucily.
I fish a fifty out of my wallet, but she pushes it away. “No. It’s on me. That’s the least I can do after destroying your kitchen.”
She plucks the list and keys from my hand. “I’ll be back in a bit,” she says, standing on her tiptoes to brush a kiss against my lips.
I haul her against me for a real kiss, and I’m rewarded with the taste of mint and fresh cherries.
When I release her, she blinks up at me, and that dreamy look is back on her face. Yeah, I plan on putting that look on her face a few more times tonight.
“Hurry back, Sunshine.”
“I will,” she promises.
After she leaves, I go into the living room and sink down on the sofa.
When Sully and the rest of our friends get here, I’ll need to work harder than ever to keep my feelings for Emmy hidden away. Especially now that she and I are doing… whatever this is we’re doing.
I’ve always done an excellent job at keeping my feelings hidden, but after spending the next few days alone with her, I’m worried they’re going to be written all over my face.
Chapter Fourteen
WILL
Emmy comes through the front door just as I finish packing the knapsack.
She pulls a box of condoms and a container of orange juice from one of the bags. “Got the provisions.”
I grin. “Priorities, right?”
“Exactly.”
She places everything on the counter and points at the knapsack. “What’s this?”
“I thought we could go for a hike. I packed us each a lunch. There’re snacks and drinks in there, too.”
“Oh, awesome!” She hesitates and glances back down at the knapsack. “Um, just how far are we going to hike? I’m hungry now. I kind of destroyed brunch, so…”
I toss her an apple. “Not far, I promise. I have a particular destination in mind,” I say, winking at her.
She walks behind the counter and wraps her arms around me. “You’re the best, Will. You’re just everything that—” she stops abruptly. “You just think of everything.”
I hug her back. “C’mon, time to go. Go get ready.”
“‘Kay. Let me go change into my running shoes, and I’ll be right down.”
*
“How much longer?” Emmy asks. This sentence is punctuated by a loud growl from her stomach, and she grins. “Told you I was hungry.”
