Forbidden Love with the Marine(55)

“What the hell...Makayla? What are you doing in my f*cking bed?”

He tried not to yell though he figured his voice had still come out in a loud roar. Makayla rubbed at her eyes, flinching at his loud tone. “I must have fallen asleep waiting...you took so long coming back...”

“Oh, excuse me; I had no idea a naked woman would be waiting under my covers, keeping them warm for lucky old me,” he said coldly, the shock at seeing her not yet worn off. He still couldn’t tell if he wasn’t just dreaming her or maybe he was finally going nuts.

“You don’t have to be mean,” Makayla mumbled, combing her wavy hair off her face as she looked at the fuming Blade. Oh boy, she’d never seen him so furious. What had made her think this was a good idea? Oh yeah, Gina. She’d thought it would be a nice touch considering how they’d met. But right then Blade didn’t seem impressed with the coincidence.

“Mean...? Are you f*cking joking...? How did you even get in here?” he growled.

Makayla sighed deeply. “Gina arranged it with the hotel. We lied that I was your fiancée though, just to make it seem even more romantic.” She couldn’t help blushing at his incredulous expression. She’d hoped to pull off a hot seduction scene but she’d been so tired waiting for him to come in from the party that she’d dozed off and hadn’t even heard him come in.

Makayla’s eyes drank him in helplessly, wishing he didn’t look so f*cking edible. She could tell he just had a shower and he hadn’t bothered with clothes before sliding into bed. Typical. And oh so sexy; reminding her that she was dressed in just her skin too.

Blade had caught her eyes on his body and snatched the covers up over his midsection. He pointed to the door. “You need to leave, right now. Or I will.”

“Don’t be like that, Blade,” Makayla said softly. “I can imagine how you must feel.”

“You have no freaking idea how I feel,” Blade gritted out. “Do you think life is all just some game? You rip a guy’s heart out and then you chew it up and now you’re here so you can spit the pieces back in my face? Fuck that.”

He turned and made to roll off the bed, but Makayla caught his arm desperately in both of hers, needing all her strength to keep him in place. She knew he could fling her off with barely a brush of his arm but she also knew he wouldn’t do anything that would potentially hurt her. Moving fast, she ambled up against him, balancing on her knees as she stared deeply into his eyes.

“I know this is unconventional...but I couldn’t figure out a better way to get you to listen to me. I need to explain why I did what I did – and how stupid I was thinking I single-handedly had the solution to something that affected both of us,” Makayla told him in a rush, her heart pounding with the effort of trying to make sense when all she could register was the heat and hardness of his body which was stiffened against hers.

“What on earth are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about the silly reason I gave about leaving you,” she cried. “I didn’t really want to let you go. But I was scared you were too tied down with Jessica and Jamie and that one day, I’d lose you to them anyway.”

“Are you saying you left me because of my ex and her son?” He looked even more hurt now.

“No! God, I’m not saying this right,” Makayla muttered, thinking fast. “Look, the truth is, I felt insecure. I told myself you loved me but I wasn’t sure it was enough. And I wasn’t even sure I deserved it. I told myself Jamie deserved it more. I figured you needed to be with them, be a normal family and my being around would jeopardize the chances of that.”

“So...to drive me into Jessica’s arms, you cooked up that story about the promotion in London?” he asked with a confused frown.

“Well, after we broke up I fully intended to go to London anyway. I did get the job and I couldn’t stand the thought of staying around knowing that I’d given you up. But then Jessica showed up on my doorstep and told me I didn’t need to make any sacrifices with our relationship because she wasn’t going to be your problem anymore. Or at least, she was going to let you be part of Jamie’s life but you didn’t need to marry her to do it.”

“Oh f*ck, this is as messed up as I thought,” Blade groaned, holding his head in his hands.

“No; it’s not,” Makayla said, gently tugging his hands down and looking into his grimacing face. “I’m sorry, Blade. I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have thought I had all the answers. I should have talked it out with you, figured out a way that worked for all of us.”

“I loved you, Makayla. It was as simple as that. But you complicated – messed up – everything,” Blade said coldly. “I knew Jessica was a problem but she was never something I couldn’t handle. You should have had more faith in me, instead of thinking you could ‘give me away’ like I was some toy you could spare.”

Makayla bit on her lip, her heart breaking as her hands fell away from him in shock and pain. “I’m sorry,” she whispered, weak to the heart and not knowing what to do.

“Sorry isn’t going to be good enough. It never is,” Blade spit out, his eyes narrowing to thin slits.

Makayla had to fight to keep from sobbing. How crazy was she to have thought she could talk him back into loving her?
