Trusting You (Second Chances #2)(13)

As if he could sense my change in mood, he slowed his pace to a gentle, sensual rhythm. “I know that look, Melissa. But you have to know that I’m not going to hurt you. You’re mine now, and I take care of what’s mine. You have to trust me.”

“I’ll try,” I whispered. “More than anything I will try.”

He nodded solemnly and continued on in his slow rhythm of tender lovemaking. Our tryst started out possessively and wild, but had turned into something much deeper … way deeper. I felt the connection open up as Brett linked his heart to mine with his gentle caresses.

“Please don’t hurt me,” I pleaded. “I’m not a weak woman, but if I let you in you better not screw up.”

Brett kissed my lips and nuzzled my nose with his. “I promise, baby, but the same goes for you as well. I’m not the only one that could screw up in this relationship.”

Thrusting deeper, he had me arching off the bed with a loud moan echoing throughout the room before I could even answer. “I promise,” I stated truthfully.

“Good,” he growled. “Now it’s time I show you what real lovemaking is like.”

For the next few hours, Brett teased and touched my body in more ways than I knew possible. When I fell asleep in his arms I had no clue if he’d be there in my bed when I woke up the next morning. I was just hoping and praying that I didn’t make a mistake.

Seven

The light filtering in through the window woke me up at precisely seven o’clock in the morning like it always did. Before I could open my eyes to that light, I could already tell I was going to find the spot beside me empty. I felt no warmth from another body or his presence in the room. My heart deflated and I tried to keep the burn from forming the tears behind my eyes.

Lying cocksucker. Why was I so stupid to believe he would stay?

My body was tired and my sex was sore from the hours that Brett spent taking what he wanted from me. Angry, I opened my eyes and climbed out of bed, staggering to the bathroom and turning on the shower water. I had to wash his scent off my body because if I spent another moment smelling it I was going to scream. As soon as the water was ready, I jumped in and scrubbed every single surface of my body, trying desperately to cleanse away any trace of Brett Walker.

“Why the hell was I so stupid to believe him?” I snapped angrily at myself.

“So stupid to believe who?”

Gasping, I threw back the shower curtain. Standing there, with his arms crossed over his chest and a scowl on his face, was Brett.

“You scared the shit out of me,” I hissed. “Don’t you know how to knock?”

He lifted an eyebrow. “I didn’t think I’d have to since you already thought I wasn’t here. Seriously, Melissa, did you not understand me at all last night?”

Feeling stupid and embarrassed, I shut the shower curtain and grumbled to myself. I jumped to conclusions and I knew I shouldn’t have, and now I had to face him. “Are you not going to answer me?” he demanded.

When I didn’t answer him, the shower curtain pulled back hastily. Entering the warm spray of water was Brett, naked and gloriously erect. I stepped back and averted my gaze, not wanting to see his accusatory stare. Grasping my chin, he gently tilted it up to look into his hurt tinged eyes.

“I think you need to know a few things about me before we continue here.” His voice was rough and laced with anger. “One, when I say something I mean it. You’ll come to learn that quickly the more time you spend with me. When I say I’m going to be here I will be here, so don’t ever doubt me; I don’t like it. Two, I’ve been burned before, way harder than you could imagine, and I’m still pained with what I went through and what I’ve seen so don’t for once think you’re the only one who’s been hurt here.”

Brett looked away with a haunted expression marring his sculpted face. I could feel the pain he was talking about flowing from his body to mine, and it hurt. “What happened to you?” I asked forlornly. “You can tell me.”

Sighing, Brett shrugged and shook his head. He kissed me gently on the lips and helped wash the soap off my body, lingering more at the area between my legs. “It’s not important right now. All I wanted you to know is that I’m not going to hurt you. The sooner you realize that the sooner we can move on and enjoy our time together.” He was keeping something from me and I could feel it. One way or another, I was going to find out what happened to him. If I was willing to tell him things about me, then he needed to do the same.

Turning off the water, Brett grabbed two towels off the rack and folded one around me before tucking one around his waist, hiding the length of him that was still pulsing with desire. My lips turned down into a pout and he guffawed. “You’ll see more of me later, firecracker, but our breakfast is getting cold. I didn’t spend all morning making you a meal just to have it ruined.”

My eyes went wide. “You cook?”

The smile on his face lit up the room. “Of course I can cook. Breakfast is my specialty, and anything cooked on the grill. Other than that you’re on your own.”

“Hey, that’s fine with me,” I agreed.

Dressing quickly in a pair of running shorts and a tank top, I noticed Brett had a new set of clothes draped across the bed. “Where did you get the clothes?” I asked curiously. “Did you go home this morning while I was asleep?”
