Intercepting Love (Second Chances #5)(63)
“I believe so,” Sam said happily. “Thankfully, it didn’t turn out as bad as it could. I’ve seen people do some really stupid shit in my line of work. I take it from the noise in the background that you travelled with Cooper to the away game?”
“Of course. I have to watch my team win,” I told him.
Sam chuckled. “Yes, and I hope they do. I’m getting ready to turn on the television and watch it. Look, I don’t know if you’ve thought about this, but did you ever decide if you wanted to issue a restraining order against Mrs. Easton? If you want my honest opinion, I think you should get one. That way I can scare her pretty hard before she leaves. If she gets anywhere near you we can throw her ass in jail.”
“Then let’s do it,” I agreed automatically. “I don’t trust her, nor do I trust Emily, but I don’t think Emily is the problem.”
“All right, I’ll get everything going with the paperwork. Enjoy the game, Ms. Townsend. Now you can rest easy.”
“Thank you, Sam. If you need anything else from me just give me a call.” As soon as we hung up, I couldn’t stop smiling. It was like a huge weight had been lifted from my shoulders and I could finally breathe. I couldn’t wait to tell Cooper the good news, especially after he dominated the field with his impressive throws. The crowd was going nuts.
When the first quarter finally ended, Cooper was able to come in for a few minutes to take a break. “Okay, so are you smiling because we’re kicking ass, or are you really just that happy for some reason?” he asked, giving me a quick kiss on the lips.
“Both,” I squealed. “Marianne turned herself in! Not only is she going to have to pay to get your new tires, but she’s going back to Ohio tomorrow with a bunch of fines and two felonies attached to her name.”
Cooper hooted and swung me around in his arms. “Thank God, the bitch is going back. Now we can put her shit behind us and move on. It’s all going to be over now.”
Hopefully, with her going back home Emily could get her the help she needed. Even though she had turned herself in and faced a felony on her permanent record, I still didn’t know if I believed it was over. Maybe a restraining order would be good to have … just in case.
We won!
When I played for Oakland I never felt such pride in my teammates like I did for Carolina. They worked so hard and never really got noticed until now. Hell, I never even noticed them and my own uncle was the coach. They weren’t a part of the division I was in, so Oakland never played them, and if they did it was only on rare occasions. I could only hope that I’d get to play against them at least one time before I retired. I wanted to show them that they made a mistake in letting me go.
“Dude, we have to celebrate tonight,” Derek shouted, clapping me on the shoulder. “We’re going to go to a couple of bars, you want to go?”
I had some celebrating to do, but it wasn’t going to be with a bunch of drunk football players at a night club. I smiled and said, “Sorry, man, but I have better things to do.”
Derek scoffed, “Yeah, I get it. You’re choosing a girl over the guys.”
Evan walked by at just that moment with a smirk on his face and bumped into him, making Derek lose his balance and fall onto the bench. “It’s not just any girl, cocksucker, it’s my sister. If he’s going to blow us off then I can forgive him if he wants to spend that time with Kate. She’s worth it. Maybe you should consider doing the same with Brianna since she’s finally decided to go out with you.”
“Would you?” Derek countered, looking more serious. The locker room was pretty much empty now that all of the guys were excited about going out for the night and celebrating.
When I first met Evan, my impression of him was that he was going to be an arrogant jackass like so many of the guys I’d played with before. The more I got to know him, the more he reminded me of Kate. They almost had the same morals and same ways about them.
Evan threw on his shirt and turned back to Derek. “Shit, if I was lucky enough to find a girl that was worth it I would ditch you guys in a heartbeat. I typically don’t attract those, though. The only girls I seem to get are bitches like Lindsey. Maybe one day.”
Kate’s voice echoed through the locker room, “Knock, knock. Are you guys almost ready? Brianna and I have been waiting out here for forever. I’m starting to think you guys gossip more than the cheerleaders.”
“Ha-ha,” Derek joked sarcastically, but to us he lowered his voice and asked quietly, “How do you know when a girl is worth it?”
Evan and I both glanced at each other and grinned before I smiled back at Derek. “You just do,” I said. “I knew the first second Kate opened up her mouth and spoke to me.”
She loathed me at the beginning, but I knew without a doubt that she was worth every second I spent thinking about her.
“I heard the guys were going to a strip club tonight. Are you sure you don’t want to go?” Kate announced from the bedroom.
We ordered in room service instead of going out with some of the guys and were about to take a soak in our own private hot tub. I had already changed into my blue swimming trunks while Kate locked herself away in our bedroom to change into her bathing suit. The moment she walked out wearing a skimpy black bikini with her golden hair hanging loose down her shoulders, the last thing on my mind was a f*cking strip club.
