Only Mine (Honey Mountain #5)(66)

I smiled. I thought she was going to torture me this morning and tell me she slept great without me. So this was music to my fucking ears.

And to my dick.

“Yes. I can get on board with that.”

“Pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Wayburn.” She smirked, and the car came to a stop, and we both climbed out when Gallan opened the door.

We rode the elevator up, and I couldn’t stop myself. I pushed her up against the wall and kissed her.

I kissed her like I’d die if I didn’t.

And she kissed me back with the same ferocity.

There was a ding in the elevator, and she pulled away just before the doors opened. We both stood on opposite sides of the elevator as three men stepped in.

“Have a good day,” she said as she strode off in front of me. I watched her ass sway back and forth as she passed my office and went to hers.

The morning was swamped with meetings, and the knock on my door pulled me from my computer screen.

“It’s open,” I said.

Tawny poked her head inside. “There’s someone here to see you. She doesn’t have an appointment, but she said it’s important.”

“Who is it?”

“Kressa Mason.”

I let out a long breath because I didn’t feel like dealing with this. But she’d called a few times, and I hadn’t answered, and she was here. I wouldn’t send her away.

“It’s fine. Send her in.”

I pushed to my feet, and Kressa stepped through the door. It had been a while since I’d seen her. Several years, actually.

She wore some sort of black tights and a short red dress and high heels. Maybe she worked in the city.

Her dark hair was shorter than it used to be and was cut at her shoulders.

“Hi, Wolf. Thanks for giving me a few minutes.”

“No problem. How are you?” I leaned over and gave her the world’s most awkward hug as I patted her on the back a few times before pulling away. She was still holding on, and I had to assist her with removing her arms.

“I’m doing well. I’m working part time at a law firm up the street.”

I motioned for her to take a seat in the leather chairs across from my desk, and I moved back around to sit down.

“That’s great.” I folded my hands together and rested them on the desk. “What can I do for you?”

She smiled, and I knew by the way she was looking at me that she was feeling nostalgic.

But I felt nothing.

There weren’t any old feelings churning in me. I wasn’t angry anymore.

When I looked at her, I just felt nothing.

It was a teenage relationship. It had run its course and ended in a way that didn’t leave me wondering what it could have been.

“I, um, well, I heard you were back for good. And I just thought I would pop in and see you. You haven’t answered any of my calls or texts. Are you still angry with me?”

“No, Kress. I’m not angry with you. I just don’t really know what we’d need to call one another for. I think we can be friendly when we run into each other, but we’re both busy with our own lives now.” I’d been back for a few months and had saved myself from this sort of confrontation until now. I still didn’t get the point of all this, anyway.

“That’s the thing, Wolf. I’m not that busy. Westin is in school and sports. He’s eight now, and so we’ve got all that. But…” She let out a breath, and her eyes were wet with emotion. “You’re back now. We only broke up because you were leaving.”

Fuck me.

Was she serious? Did she even hear herself? We’d ended things almost a decade ago, for God’s sake.

“I’d say there was a little more to it. Listen, I don’t have any hard feelings toward you. I wish you nothing but the best. I’ve heard that Westin is a great kid, and I’m happy for you, Kress. I really am. But there is no you and me. Not anymore.”

A sob left her throat, which caught me off guard, and she whimpered. I moved to my feet and came around the desk and bent down in front of her.

“What’s this about? We haven’t spoken much in almost a decade. Why are you upset about this?”

She swiped at her cheeks and got herself under control. “You’re right. I don’t know. I guess I just thought maybe we could try again. Are you single?”

“I’m not. I’m with someone, and I’m happy.” It wasn’t a complete lie. Dylan and I weren’t in a normal relationship, but we were monogamous, and I was fucking happy with her.

Kressa nodded just as the door flew open, and Dylan Thomas stormed the fucking castle. Her eyes were full of fire, and she glared at me as I was bent down in front of my ex-girlfriend, which could come off as inappropriate if one didn’t know the context.

I pushed to my feet, and Dylan marched toward me with a handful of files. She swatted them against my chest, and the look on her face was venomous. “Here you go. I need you to look at these as soon as possible, as they’re urgent.”

I opened the top folder, and there was nothing inside except for some blank paper.

“I see. Well, I appreciate how diligent you are.”

“I’ll bet you do. I didn’t mean to interrupt your little—” She tapped her finger against her lips. “Rendezvous.”
