Game(40)
“Are we supposed to be leaving?” I asked.
“Nope,” Finn said. “But we are. I’m done.”
“Are you going to get in trouble?”
Finn looked at me and grinned. “After what Fiore just saw, I think we’re good.”
My cheeks burned hotter.
We got into Finn’s truck and left the parking lot. The last time I left a fight with Finn, I was holding a gun to him.
This time it was much calmer. Every time I looked at Finn I felt my heart race faster and faster. He was getting to me. I was letting him get to me. Even in the midst of all that danger waiting, I still wanted him. I wanted Finn. I wanted to know his entire story. I wanted something to work out with me, him, and Fiore. There had to be a way to do it.
What about Zander?
Of course.
Zander.
He wouldn't just let me go either.
He’d come for me. He’d come to kill Finn.
“Ah, f*ck,” Finn whispered.
“What?”
“Hold tight, sweetie.”
“Why? What’s wrong?”
“We have a tail,” Finn said.
He hit the accelerator. The engine of the pickup truck growled.
I looked back and felt my heart drop.
He’s here… Zander is coming for me… right now.
29.
(Finn)
I could get on a video chat with my cell phone with someone halfway across the world, but there were still places that didn’t get cell service.
Not that I could do much right now with my cell. If I called Fiore and if he answered, by the time he caught up to me, shit would have already hit the fan.
The truck barreled right up on my bumper. I hoped it was just Cormac following me, f*cking around, but then I saw the guns. The driver and the passenger each held weapons out their windows.
“Get down!” I yelled and grabbed at Shayna.
I tore her by the shoulder, putting her head on my lap. I ducked my head as far as I could without losing sight of the road. Bullets pinged off the truck and shattered the back window of the truck. My hand pressed hard to Shayna’s shoulder. Her head was right between my legs. My cock shouldn’t have been thinking anything wild in that moment, but I couldn’t fight it off. Even with people shooting at me, I was still turned on by her.
“Get ready,” I warned.
I sped up and then slammed my brakes. The truck smashed into the back of my truck. The weapons fell from the shooters hands. I hurried to slam on the gas again and cut the wheel, purposely letting the ass of the truck cut left to right. That allowed my back tires to throw up some dirt, rocks, and plenty of dust.
I then quickly took a sharp right, fearing I was going to roll the truck. I swore I felt it start to go, but we stayed with all four tires on the ground. We were on another dirt path now. This one more narrow with way more danger.
I rode hard and fast.
I checked the mirrors a few times, hoping that maybe I had actually lost the guys.
Not a f*cking chance.
This wasn’t some action movie or something.
The truck found the turn, made it, and was coming right back up on us.
“Sweetie, open the glovebox,” I said. “There’s a gun. Hand it to me.”
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“It’s either us or them,” I said. “Who do you want to survive?”
Shayna sat up and ran a hand through her hair. She nodded. She opened the glovebox and my heart twisted hard.
Just like with Carrie, right? On the same roads. Except we drove slow. We talked and laughed. I had her open the glovebox to find a map. With a red circle on it. The spot where I was going to build a cabin for her.
Shayna grabbed the gun and handed it to me.
This was what my life had become. The fall of the tragedy still continued.
The truck got closer.
We hit a small bump and I felt like the truck was going to go airborne.
I kept the wheel straight and the truck steady.
“You have to hold the wheel for me,” I said. “Okay? Keep it straight.”
Shayna didn’t think twice. She grabbed the wheel. I put the window down, and turned, sticking my hand out the window. I shot twice and saw sparks off the other truck. It quickly started to dart left to right.
I had them!
Or so I thought…
A second later, two more weapons came out the windows. They were just handguns this time, nothing fast and automatic. I quickly shot again and the truck started to turn. One more bullet and I hit the passenger. His arm flopped down, dropping the gun. The truck turned again, the ass hitting a tree. I kept shooting, unloading the entire clip. The truck spun and started to roll. Over and over and over, bouncing like a toy.
I hurried to fully get back in the truck and take the wheel from Shayna.
I put both hands to the steering wheel just in time to see a fallen tree blocking the way.
I could only scream one thing.
“We’re going to crash!”
~
I cut the wheel, wanting the impact to be all on me. I couldn’t let anything happen to Shayna. The wheels dug in the dirt and it felt like the entire truck lifted up off the ground. I realized there was no chance in hell of saving the truck or getting out of the crash so I jumped at Shayna, trying to grab her.
