Good Girl Bad (52)
Unspoken in those words, is Rebecca conveying: I know you might be more comfortable with anyone but me. I accept that. I will keep working on it. Forever. At first she thought she had to say them out loud, over and over. But her therapist told her she just had to show Tabby that that was the case.
She puts more thought into how to do that than in any other thing she has ever done.
Now, Tabby dithers on the deck. Then she comes to a decision. She steps closer to them, and leans down to kiss Nate on the cheek. “Bye, Dad,” she says.
Then without missing a beat, she leans over to Rebecca, too. “Bye, Mom,” she says, her eyes flicking to Rebecca’s, then she plants a kiss firmly on Rebecca’s cheek, then turns on her heel and skips lightly down the stairs, her ponytail swinging.
She doesn’t look back, and Nate and Rebecca watch her wheel her bike from the shed in amicable silence.
Then she swings one leg over and pedals away.
Thank you for reading Good Girl Bad. I hope you enjoyed it, and I’d love you to join me for my next standalone novel, Sister in Trouble:
