They fuck you up, your mum and dad.

They may not mean to, but they do.

They fill you with the faults they had

And add some extra, just for you.



That’s the first verse. And I wouldn’t call it an uplifting poem, that’s for sure. But I guess we should all take comfort where we find it.

I miss Sasha terribly: her razor tongue; her arctic eyes; her manic, unpredictable energy. I really did love her.

Probably I still do.

“Dude!” Jude says, waving his hand in front of my face. “You’re literally about to walk into traffic.”

I snap back into myself. “Sorry.”

“Don’t apologize to me,” he says. “Just watch where you’re freaking going, okay?”

I smile at him. “I know where I’m going,” I say. “Finally.”

And together we open the doors to Arlington High School, Home of the Fighting Tigers, where our futures—whatever glory or mess they’ll be—await us.
