Trusting Nicole (The Last Hangman MC #4)(44)

“Not sure about that but I know you won’t let anything happen to her.”

“True. She’s like a sister to me. I just wanted her to be comfortable last night, she was all twisted and not just in her head.” That makes the both of us chuckle.

“Good to know.”

“Is she awake?”

“No, couldn’t bring myself to wake her up.”

He nods. “Be careful and make sure nothing happens to Lewis.”

I nod and smirk. “Look who has a heart.”

“Fucking hell, you and Nic really are a match.”

“Still don't understand what she sees in me.”

“Neither do I, but women.” He shrugs and eats another donut.

“So true.” I chuckle and head out the door but turn around when I hear Callum call my name. “Be careful and don’t get yourself killed.”

“I won’t.” I head out, hoping I'll survive this and that no one else will be killed.

I drop my car off at Lewis’ house and we head out in an unmarked car.

“How is Nicole?”

“She’s good, better now that her brothers know about us and my past.” I explain, taking a sip of coffee Lewis handed to me when I reached her house.

“That’s good, right?”

“Yeah, they beat me up but that’s good. At least we have an understanding now.”

She chuckles. “Can’t blame them, after all you were supposed to be a cop and you lied to them for so long. Glad they’re approving of you though.”

“I wouldn’t go as far as approving, but they are tolerating it. If I hurt her I’m dead, you know, the usual threats.”

“Fair enough.” She chuckles.

“You really do want me dead, huh?”

“No, but I’m sure it makes the relationship all the more exciting.”

“I wish I could tell you. I haven’t been able to fully enjoy being with Nicole yet. We had a couple of nights alone, but we haven’t been able to sit down and talk about us properly.”

“After all of this, you’ll have all the time in the world with her.” She smiles.

“I hope so.” I sigh.

“Don’t doubt it, you’ll be okay.”

We are parked in the parking lot of a dive bar, keeping a look out for any suspicious activity. The Disciples are supposed to have a meeting today. One of Sergei’s men overheard someone talking about a meeting with them here today so hopefully they’ll show up as expected. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’s not another set up. I hate wasting my time on scum like them.

After two hours and no sign of any of the Disciples, we are slowly losing hope that they will show up. Lewis and I are both startled when we hear the radio go off.

“Unit 13 to Unit 5.”

“Unit 5, what’s going on?” Lewis answers.

“Is Sanders with you?” Rienks, one of my officers asks.

“Yes, I’m here too. What’s going on?”

“They aren’t heading your way. They’re heading into the city.”

“Motherf*cker. How do you know?” I ask, beyond pissed.

“They attacked someone right outside of Kenner. They must have been tipped off that we were on the lookout for them again.”

“We’re on our way back.” Lewis says before turning the radio off. “Something is off.”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s the second time they’ve been tipped off that we’re going to ambush them. We have men in Kenner and none of the Disciples have been arrested. If they were doing their job then how in the hell could they have missed them?” Lewis says driving off.

“None of this makes any f*cking sense.”

“It’s working.” She sighs.

“That it is.”

We are just outside of New Orleans when we see a patrol car flank us and motion for us to pull over.

“This can’t be good.” Lewis says as she parks the car and readies her gun. I make for mine too but the officer from the police car gets out and points his gun at me.

“Out of the car, hands where I can see them, Sanders.” Walters demands.

“Is this some kind of sick joke?”

“You are the joke, Sanders. I know all about you.”

“What the f*ck are you talking about, Walters.”

“I know who you are. You’re not a real cop, you work for the Russians. Did you really think you could hide it forever?” he says, provoking me.

“How did you find out?”

“They told me.” He keeps the gun pointed at my head.

“Who?”

“The Disciples.”

“What?” I ask him, confused.

“Who do you think tipped them off?” He smirks.

“You work for them? I don’t even know why I’m f*cking surprised. I never trusted you, but going as low as working for the scumbags you said you couldn’t stand and couldn’t wait to see dead? I’m shocked.” I say in disbelief.

“I didn’t have a choice. They were threatening my family!” Walters exclaims, I can see he’s getting anxious and agitated.

“You always have a choice. I could have helped you out but no, you had to go behind my back and team up with the enemy. I guess you never learned from witnessing so many families fall after teaming up with MCs.”
