Play Fair (The Devil's Share Book 3)(40)

She sat up and stretched her arms over her head. “She got up with Luke a little while ago.”

“Really? Luke stayed at home last night?”

Bryan wrinkled her nose. “Nope. I heard him come up the stairs and I guess Landry did too. When he saw that she was awake he asked if she was hungry… Should I have gone with them downstairs?”

I shook my head. “No, I’m just surprised Luke offered to make her breakfast. I’m sure he’s hung over as f*ck.” I leaned down and kissed her mouth, rubbing my hand on the strip of bare skin on her stomach. She moaned and wiggled underneath me. “Something wrong, doll?” I loved that she was just as worked up as I was. Last night was f*cking phenomenal, but I wanted more. And obviously she did too.

She narrowed her eyes at me, smiling. “I’m fine.”

I let my chuckle follow her into the bathroom.

We both got ready for the day with only a few hands-in-the-hair, up-against-the-wall make-out sessions slowing us down, and then headed to check on Landry. She was sitting on the couch, a book in her hands and an empty bowl of cereal in front of her. Luke was passed out on the long part of the sectional, a pillow over his face. “Uncle Luke get you some breakfast?”

“Yes. But then he said he didn’t feel good and he needed to take a little nap. Is he sick?”

Bryan and I both said yes at the same time. I wasn’t thrilled that Landry had to see Luke hung over like that. But on the flip side, he’d made an effort for her. He made her breakfast; he didn’t leave her alone down here…I couldn’t be that mad at him. I kissed the top of my kid’s head and then went to make some coffee. I couldn’t keep my eyes off Bryan while she made herself some tea. Every move she made was sexy. I kept getting flashbacks of last night, the way her skin looked in the low light, the way her body felt under my hands. “Hey, tonight is date number three, right?”

She glanced over at me, a small smile on her lips. “Yes.” Bryan discreetly pinched my ass and then walked into the living room. She sat her tea on the side table and plopped down next to Landry.

Lexi and Dylan came in the room at the same time. “Do you two synchronize your alarms?”

Lexi pursed her lips. “Uh, yeah. And we try to always coordinate our outfits too.” She frowned down at Luke. “He stay out all night?”

I shrugged. “Honestly can’t say.” That wasn’t a lie. I glanced over at Bryan, whose thumbs were flying over her phone. She was texting a mile a minute.

I wasn’t a jealous person, but who the hell could she be texting? I was here, Dylan was here…maybe Mikah? “Who are you talking to?”

She shrugged. “Shep text—” Her eyes went wide as she looked up at me. “Holy shit. Shep.”

I shook my head, trying to hide a smile. “Told you you didn’t like him.” The fact that her supposed boyfriend never crossed her mind while we were together should have made me feel bad. But it didn’t. It made me feel good. Made me feel skilled and very male.

Bryan put her hand to her mouth. “I’m a terrible person.”

I reached out like a ninja and plucked her phone from her hands. I pulled up their text history; I didn’t read it. I just typed out a reply and then tossed her phone on the couch beside her.

She picked it up, biting her fingernail as she read:

I am staying in Florida indefinitely. I think it’s best we go our separate ways. No hard feelings. Peace.

She shot me a look. “‘Peace’? Really?”

I just winked.

Dylan came in from the kitchen with an armful of organic yogurts. “What the hell are you two smiling and winking about?” She passed one out to each of us. Landry looked at the container and then up at me, clearly making a do-I-have-to-eat-this face.

I grinned and gave her a slight shake of my head before answering Dylan. Because once again Bryan wasn’t going to do it. Instead of wine, though, she was shoveling the disgusting probiotic-filled yogurt in her mouth. “B just broke up with Shep.”

“Oh, uh, are you okay? Are you bummed about it? Do we need to have a girls’ night?” Dylan sent her sister a sympathetic smile.

Bryan shook her head. “Nah. I’m good.”

Dylan glanced over at Lexi; luckily, she just shrugged and went back to her gross yogurt. I don’t know why either of them were eating it. They both looked ready to gag with each bite they took. “Nah, I’m good? How long were the two of you together?”

Bryan closed her eyes tight, obviously trying to remember how long she’d been dating Shep the Frat Strap. “I don’t know…maybe, like, three months?”

“Three months? And it’s over and you just don’t care? See what I’m talking about, Bryan? It’s a pattern.” Dylan was starting to irritate me. I was done hearing about B’s ex, about her flighty past. I had enough fears to deal with right now without Dylan constantly reminding me that Bryan didn’t do long term.

Bryan sighed and turned toward her sister. “It wasn’t that serious of a relationship. I wasn’t really that into him, even from the beginning. It’s not a big deal.” I saw her eyes cut to me for a brief second. “Can we just drop it please?”

“Were you two…?” Dylan let her words trail off when she remembered Landry was still sitting on the couch, silently taking all this in. “Hanging out, um, after hours?”
