Omega's Destiny: Foxes of Scarlet Peak (An M'M Shifter MPreg Romance Book 5)(16)

“And then I’ll get…big and fat!” he laughed, smiling at me.

“Curvy!” I corrected him, putting my hand on his. “And you know what? You’ll probably turn me on even more when you’re pregnant than you do now – if that’s even possible.”

Bobby just smiled, then leaned in and kissed me.

“How is it you’re so sweet?”

I laughed and did an arrogant stretch, flashing him a grin. “Oh, it’s from all my years sweet talking you omegas.”

“Jerk!” Bobby gasped, slapping me on the shoulder. I winced, pretending it hurt, and wrapped my arm around him.

“No, it’s just you,” I smiled. “I’m not trying to be anything – I just am around you. I just want to take care of you, protect you and spend my life with you.”

“Do you – do you believe at love at first sight?” Bobby asked me timidly.

“I never thought I did,” I replied after a moment. “But I definitely believe in love at first scent.”

“Do I smell that good?”

“You tell me,” I replied. “Do I?”

Bobby didn’t even have to think about that. He responded immediately. “Yes!”

“Okay, then,” I laughed. “Same for me.”

“How is it that you don’t already have a mate?” Bobby asked.

For a moment, I didn’t know how to respond. This was a conversation I knew would be coming, but hadn’t been too excited to have. Not because I didn’t want to tell him about Chris, but because it still hurt to think about him. It had already been years, but young love leaves a lasting impression on everyone.

“I was in love once,” I told him finally. “An omega named Chris. I was living in Texas, working for a biker gang.”

“That’s how you knew about all this,” Bobby replied.

“That’s right. I made some mistakes, and…Chris paid for it.”

“What…what happened?”

I licked my lips and felt my heart start to race. “They killed him.”

My words hung in the air like a poison. I knew what I had just laid on him wasn’t really fair at this point, but he’d asked me, and I wasn’t going to lie to him. I didn’t expect him to know how to respond – I sure wouldn’t if he’d told me something like that. So I was completely shocked when he spoke.

“I know how you feel. I lost my father when I was twelve.”

“What happened?”

“Lung cancer,” he said sadly. “He didn’t even smoke. It’s hard to lose someone like that. I’m surprised you’re even able to love me…”

“So am I,” I replied, instantly realizing that was the wrong way of putting it. “I mean – not that I’m surprised I can love you! Just…surprised I can love at all. For a long time I thought I would never be able to again.”

“So what happened?” Bobby asked.

I looked into his eyes and smiled. “I met you.”

Bobby

Pregnant, I thought as I stood under the warm water of the shower, looking down at my stomach. It wasn’t any bigger than it was yesterday, of course, but I couldn’t stop thinking about what I’d look like carrying Clint’s baby.

What will we call him? I thought. Or her!

Honestly, I didn’t care what we had, but for some reason I was thinking that we’d have a boy. I don’t know why, it just seemed to me like Clint was the kind of alpha that would have boys. My mom knew a human woman from the diner whose husband could only have girls. They had five before they gave up trying for a boy

“Mom!” I blurted out, realizing that it had been two days and I hadn’t checked in with her. She must have been worried sick!

Quickly, I shut off the water, grabbed a towel, wrapped it around my waist and rushed into the bedroom. My phone was in my pants pocket, and when I checked it, I felt like the world’s biggest idiot.

Seventeen missed calls. Four voicemails. All from mom. I unlocked the phone and called her. She answered after two rings.

“Bobby!?” She was practically screaming. “Bobby is that you!?”

“It’s me, mom—”

“What in the Hell is going on!?” she bellowed. “Where in God’s name have you been? Why didn’t you answer your phone? Are you trying to give me a goddamn heart attack? Do you know how worried I’ve been!? I almost called the police!”

“Mom, mom! Calm down!”

“Don’t tell me to calm down, you!” she snapped. It was still early afternoon, so she wasn’t at work just yet, but she was probably getting ready to head out soon. “I’ve been worried sick! Where the Hell are you!?”

“I’m sorry, mom,” I stammered as I started to break out into a sweat. I really had been irresponsible, but I’d been so wrapped up in what had been going on with Clint that everything else had slipped my mind. Honestly, this was another reason I’d been working for the gang – to get enough money to move out and not have to explain my every move to my mom.

“Don’t tell me you’re sorry,” she replied. “Tell me where you are!”
