Indecent Danger (Danger Incorporated #3)(43)
“We better clean up and zip up, baby. We’re almost to the resort. I’m sure our driver would love to get an eyeful of you but he might not be as thrilled to see all of me.” He kissed her again, hard but brief. “I can’t wait to get you back to our suite. I hope I haven’t worn you out.”
Giggling, she let her fingers run through his thick, springy hair. “Not in the least. There are several more things I want to do to you tonight. We are celebrating, after all.”
“That’s what I love about you, kitten. Your enthusiasm.”
Aubrey didn’t know if it was truly love yet, but if there was any man on this earth she could love it was this one. He was everything she’d hoped for and much more.
He was real, and solid and respectful.
And sexy.
She just might let herself fall in love with him.
It would be the most dangerous thing she’d ever done.
Chapter Twenty-Two
?
Travis and Aubrey paused outside of Martin and Alana’s suite door. He gently squeezed her hand to remind her that it was simply breakfast. Martin might know that Aubrey had been a suspect but he also knew that she was in the clear. He certainly didn’t know about the specifics of what Bruce had threatened and he need never know. Travis would take Aubrey’s secret to the grave. Honestly it wasn’t anything she should feel embarrassed about but it would take more than a weekend in Florida to convince her of that.
Hopefully they had a lifetime.
“Ready?” Travis asked Aubrey. She took a deep breath but nodded, shifting on her feet. She was dressed in a pretty flowered dress today and gold flat sandals. She’d pulled her long thick hair back with a barrette and it showed off the graceful curve of her neck and shoulders. Even after a night filled with lovemaking his body hadn’t had enough. Like a hormone filled teenager he wanted her again.
Rapping his knuckles on the door, he leaned over to give Aubrey a quick kiss on the forehead and barely made it before Alana was there ushering them in and back out to the patio where they’d visited previously.
“Thanks for the breakfast invite.” Travis sat down with Aubrey on his right and Martin and Alana across from him. “Is Caroline joining us?”
A frown flitted across Martin’s features only to be replaced with anger. “She’s still asleep. That damn detective questioned her for over two hours yesterday. Finally our attorney called a halt to the whole thing but by then she was so upset she couldn’t get to sleep for hours. Alana finally convinced Caroline to take one of her Ambien pills which luckily worked.”
Shrugging, Alana poured them all coffee from the large carafe. “My insomnia finally paid off in some way. Within a half hour she was out like a light. With everything she’s been through she deserves a good rest. There’s the room service.”
Alana bustled back into the suite to let in the food delivery and Travis took the opportunity to lean closer to Martin. “Listen, I want to apologize about the last time we talked. I didn’t mean to come off–”
“Don’t give it another thought.” Martin chuckled at Travis’s discomfiture. “You’re like me, son. When you’re determined you make things happen and that’s exactly what someone needs to do. Have you found out anything?”
“Shane’s due back later today. He’s been running around New York City trying to talk to the bookie and also to a few other people, so he hasn’t contacted me.”
“Which frustrates the hell out of you.” Aubrey patted him on the arm. “He said if he had anything significant he would call. I think this just means that he hasn’t learned anything that earth shattering.”
That’s what Travis was afraid of but there wasn’t a damn thing he could do about it. Neither he nor Shane could force anyone to talk to them. As it was, they’d used some rather underhanded techniques to speak to people. Not that he regretted it. He’d do anything to clear Aubrey or any of his friends and family, but he’d only wished he could do it a little more out in the open.
Martin smiled kindly at Aubrey. “I’m sorry that you got caught up in this. I hate to speak ill of the dead but Bruce caused a lot of trouble in his life. Hopefully he’ll find some peace, as we all will too.”
“Thank you,” Aubrey replied softly. “I hope your granddaughter is going to be okay. Being married to Bruce couldn’t have been easy.”
“Being his widow hasn’t turned out to be much better.” Alana was back on the patio directing the staff as to where to place the trays of food. “She’s going to go through more hell before this over. Even in death he can’t leave her alone.”
The resort staff filed out but before Alana could close the door Detective Prather entered the suite.
“Detective, what can we do for you today? Caroline is asleep so if you want to talk to her you’ll have to wait.” Alana pointed to the resort hallway. “Somewhere else preferably.”
Martin stood to join Alana inside and Travis and Aubrey followed, wanting to show support for their friend. It was a cluster the way Prather was conducting this investigation as if everyone was guilty as hell and it was up to them to prove themselves innocent. It was Prather’s f*cking job to find the guilty party, but he seemed unable to look past the fact that all the suspects were rich as hell.
