Forbidden Love with the Marine(37)
Makayla cut off, suddenly realizing how that might sound. Quickly moving over it, she added, “Look uh, just tell me your name and I’ll see if I can...”
“Don’t bother,” the woman with the surprisingly deep and sensual voice said. “Just tell him his son Jamie is in the hospital and he needs to call me back as soon as possible. I’m Jamie’s mother.”
Wha...? Even before Makayla could finish that thought the line went dead.
Chapter Eight
Makayla jumped when she heard Blade’s voice behind her. She hadn’t heard his footsteps until he was right there, mere feet away.
“I heard the phone ring. Was it for me?”
Swallowing hard, Makayla replaced the receiver before turning to face him. He was in the doorway, leaning against the frame. He’d pulled on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and even with his short blonde hair sticking out in places, he still looked like the sexiest thing on two legs.
Yes, Blade Weber was sexy as sin – and he had big secrets.
Not that Makayla was the one to judge. But after the phone call, his enigmatic persona was beginning to ring alarm bells.
He walked toward her, looking puzzled about her expression as she tried to gather her wits.
“I can’t remember what woke me – must have been the smell of delicious coffee or the ringing of the phone,” he murmured, looking dubiously at the plate of toast she’d placed on the counter. His manner was so casual and easy, not at all as if he’d just spent the last night stamping imprints of his massive cock within her still throbbing inner folds.
“Um...Blade. About that call,” Makayla began, “It was from a woman who said she’s Jamie’s mother –“
She yelped at the sudden way he moved. In a second he was right in front of her, fast as a puma and almost just as menacing. Makayla gulped.
He grabbed her by the shoulders and stared hard into her face. “Tell me exactly what she said.”
Ow, thought Makayla as his fingers dug into her flesh. Obviously Blade never knew his own strength. Flinching, she tried to remember what the deep-toned woman had said.
“She said to tell you...that your son Jamie is in the hospital and you need to call her back as soon as possible,” Makayla said, adding calmly, “Emphasis hers, not mine.”
He swore harshly, making her wince as he suddenly let go and reached quickly for the phone.
Chapter Nine
Blade dialed Jessica’s number by memory, barely aware of Makayla hovering close by. He strove for calm and tried not to think the worst.
Giving Jessica the number to the house had ensured she knew where to reach him at all times. If Jamie was really in hospital and anything had happened to him...
Not wanting to even think about that, he listened to Jessica’s words for a minute and then said calmly, “I’m coming right over. Just tell me where to find you.”
He scribbled down the address of the hospital. Hanging up the phone, he turned to see Makayla with a worried expression on her face as she hugged her arms about her.
“Is everything OK?” she asked quietly.
There was no judgment, no blame on her face but he knew she must be wondering what the hell was going on.
“Makayla, I’ll explain everything when I get back. But I have to leave now. You’ll be fine, right?”
“Yes...of course.”
He didn’t want to go like this, especially not after last night.
Last night...
Blade blinked for a moment and cupped her face before planting a quick kiss on her lips. “We’ll talk later, I promise.” With that, he left her standing in the middle of the kitchen as he grabbed his jacket and made his way out the front door.
Chapter Ten
Two days later, Makayla still hadn’t made up her mind what she was going to do about the present situation. She kept going over and over in her mind where she had gone terribly off track.
The devastation from the phone call was still very raw. It was like winning the lottery and then dying from a heart attack just moments after getting hold of the cash.
Well, maybe she was over-dramatizing things but it still felt like she’d tasted heaven with Blade and now it all felt like ashes. Had anything they’d shared been real?
She’d always been very careful and focused. Especially in her relationships. What had made her break all the rules for Blade? What had made her think she knew enough about him to trust him not only with her friendship, but her body after only one day?
And now with the recent bombshell she’d experienced, she found herself in a dilemma.
Distracted all through the day at work, unable to really function, she found herself worried that she may have moved far too quickly where Blade was concerned.
She realized it the moment he’d walked out the door the morning after their steamy night together, promising he’d be back and he’d explain everything.
Once he was gone, Makayla seemed galvanized into action.
The next thing she knew, she was moving on automatic pilot, packing a few clothes and things she’d need for a weekend away. At the last minute, she scrawled a brief note on a post-it which she left on the door of the fridge. “I’ll be away for a few days on a sudden business trip. Please don’t worry about me as I’ll be fine. You take care. Makayla,’ the note had said.
