Defending Morgan (Mountain Mercenaries #3)(54)
He unlocked his door and headed into his apartment. He had to get ready to go back to The Pit and discuss Morgan’s case some more. Meat had been doing some investigating on his computer and wanted to discuss what he’d found. Arrow wanted to stare at his phone until Morgan responded, but he forced himself to put it down and go shower.
Ten minutes later, he was back in the kitchen and saw he had a text waiting for him.
Morgan: Just when I don’t think you can get any better . . . you prove me wrong.
Arrow smiled and tucked his phone into his pocket. He wanted to write her back. Wanted to call her and hear her voice. But the best thing he could do for her right now was give her space. Let her be who she was meant to be. In the meantime, he’d figure out who the hell was behind her kidnapping and make sure she never, ever had to worry about that happening again.
Chapter Fourteen
Morgan smiled as she texted Arrow. They’d been texting almost nonstop since she’d left his apartment a week earlier.
Morgan: Is it weird that the mattress in my mom’s guest room is too soft?
Arrow: No. You could get some boards to put under it to give it more support.
Morgan: I’m not sure that would help. I slept on the hard ground so long that I think it ruined me.
Arrow: You slept on the bed in the hotel and on my couch in my arms and were just fine. It’ll just take time to acclimate.
Morgan: I did, didn’t I? :)
Arrow: Yup.
Morgan: What are you doing today?
Arrow: Grocery store, meeting with Meat, then working out.
Morgan: Are you sure you have enough time? I mean, it’ll take you hours to organize your pantry after shopping.
Arrow: Are you making fun of me?
Morgan: Maybe. :)
Arrow: What about you? What’s on your agenda for the day?
Morgan: Well, I wanted to stay in today because I have a headache and my stomach hurts, but I have something I need to do.
Arrow: I’m sorry you don’t feel good. Where are you going?
Morgan: The women’s clinic downtown.
Arrow: Why? Are you okay? Are you sicker than you’re letting on? Do you need me to arrange for you to see a doctor?
Arrow: Why didn’t you tell me you needed a doctor? Dammit, beautiful . . .
Morgan: I’m fine.
Morgan: Seriously. Stop panicking.
Arrow: I can’t. Not when you tell me you’re going to the doctor and your mom isn’t there to go with you. Do you need me to come down?
Morgan: If I said yes, you’d come?
Arrow: In a heartbeat. I’d see if I could get Rex to let me borrow the plane. I could be there in around two hours.
Morgan: Wow. As much as I’m tempted, this is something I need to do on my own.
Arrow: Call me.
Morgan: No. I can’t talk to you about this.
Arrow: Seriously, call me, Morgan.
Morgan: No.
Arrow: I’m annoyed with you. You should know.
Morgan: Why does that make me smile?
Arrow: Because you know it means I give a shit. Now tell me what’s up, or I will show up and track your ass down.
Morgan: I know I was tested when I first got back and everything came back negative, and I’m sure the doctor I saw was good, but I can’t shake the feeling that maybe she missed something. I don’t know what, but because I’ve been feeling so rotten lately, I thought maybe I should go to the women’s clinic here and get retested . . . just to make me feel better and to make sure I’m clean.
Morgan: Arrow? Are you there?
Arrow: I’m here. Although I’m contemplating flying back down to Santo Domingo and hunting down the assholes who had you and killing them slowly.
Arrow: I can’t type fast enough to get all this out, but since you won’t call me . . .
Arrow: I think it’s a good idea to go.
Arrow: I hate that I’m not there to go with you.
Arrow: I’m no doctor, but I don’t think your symptoms really coincide with an STD. But no matter what the doc says today, or any doc says in the future, it’s not going to make me want you any less.
Arrow: I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. If you decide you want to give whatever’s between us a go, I’m the lucky one. I’m fully aware that I’m not the best catch.
Arrow: I’m OCD when it comes to neatness.
Arrow: I have a job that takes me out of town way too much.
Arrow: If I’m not on a mission, I’m usually tinkering with electronics.
Arrow: I’m slightly claustrophobic and overprotective with those I love.
Arrow: Will you call me later?
Morgan swallowed hard before responding.
Morgan: How do you always know what to say to make me feel better?
Arrow: Because. Now, will you call me later?
Morgan: Bossy. Yes. I’ll call.
Arrow: Good. Have you talked to your dad lately?
Morgan: Nice change of subject. And yes, he called yesterday.
Arrow: And?
Morgan: He keeps trying to get me to agree to the one-on-one interviews.
Arrow: You should only do what you want to do, beautiful.
Morgan: Thanks. I told him I’d think about it. Arrow?
Arrow: Yeah?
Morgan: I miss you.
Arrow: Not as much as I miss you.
Morgan: It’s only been a week.
