I smile into her hair. “Fancy getting a new family member?”

She turns to look at me. “What do you mean?”

“There’s a German Shepherd pup, failed military training, but one of my friends trained him, and he says he’ll make a perfect pet and guard dog. He freaks at loud bangs though and runs away – no good as a sniffer dog.”

“Oh wow! A puppy.” Her eyes shine.

“Yep. What do you think?”

“I think, yes.” She peppers my face with kisses.

She’s my family now, her and our dogs, the only family I need.
