Ghost Writer(93)
“You will be under surveillance for your protection. I will check in with you from time to time and you will have a contact number in case something comes up.”
He leaned over the table and our knees touched. “Even if I can't be there, you won't be alone.”
I felt tears well up and blinked them back. “I'll tell Dora I'll see the expedition through to the end. Seamus won't be happy but…”
He interrupted. “He could join you. He can take Dr. Leland’s place. There’s no real danger now and I’m sure the educational opportunity would outweigh missing a couple of weeks of school. We just have to run it by the skipper.”
Not giving a damn if I embarrassed myself, I jumped up and threw my arms around Gravell’s neck and fell into his lap. He hugged back and his breath tickled my ear.
“Genevieve, I have spent more than a month resisting temptation so that I won't be reassigned. Let's not blow it now.”
“Resisting temptation?”
“It hasn't been easy,” he whispered.
Gravell stood, lifting me to my feet at the same time. He offered me his arm. “Let's walk, Madame Kirby.”
It was as well I took his arm. It was the only thing that kept me from floating away with happiness. I was alive. I had a great job. Soon my son would be with me. Gravell admitted he was resisting temptation.
“How long before you can give in to temptation?”
I felt his silent laughter. “You are incorrigible, Madame Kirby.”
“Absolutely. Lucky for you, Chief Gravell, I'm also patient.”
