Dangerous Lies(48)
I sank down on him, and his hands clenched onto my skin. It was uncomfortable at first, but kept from wincing. I hugged him, keeping my body still and meshed with his.
He nipped my jaw, then found the crook of my neck, planting kisses on every inch of my skin. “You’re such an angel,” whispered into my skin. “I’m so thankful to have you in my arms.”
“I’m thankful to have you in real life. I love you, Jake.”
His head rested on the cushion, gazing up at me while I began to move. “Me too, Love.”
Prologue
“Is that the last of the boxes?” Jake groaned, setting down a wardrobe loaded with my winter clothing in his closet.
“Yes, it is,” I sang, dropping another smaller box next to it. “Think there will be enough room?”
“Better be. I moved half of my clothing to the guest closet for you.”
I put my hand over my chest. “I’ve never felt so honored.”
“I did have more than enough time to prepare for you,” Jake pouted.
I rolled my eyes and stood on my tip toes to kiss away his frown. “I’m here now, you can stop grumbling.” I’d stayed in the States for three months, getting my life in order and ready to move to New Zealand. Jake didn’t like it, but it only made our relationship stronger.
Giving him another chaste kiss, I left the closet and headed into the kitchen. I didn’t have a lot of things, but it was enough to be noticeable with the amount of boxes I’d shipped. I’m sure more and more would trickle in within the next few weeks.
“Any word from Sandra?” He asked, following me.
“Not a peep. I’m not surprised, she was pretty pissed when I ripped up our contract in front of her and the rest of the elders on the board of the publishing house.”
Jake grinned, setting his hands on my hips. “My little rebel. I’m so proud of you. I thought for sure she’d contact you about Martin.”
I snorted. “Why? I’m the reason he’s in jail for the max amount of his sentence. Pretty sure she would have fired me within a month’s time anyway.”
“You don’t see me complaining. Can’t wait to figure out your marketing plan.”
I poked his chest gently with my finger. “You better, because I have no clue what I’m doing with representing my own stuff.”
“Posting a backward selfie with me will help your following,” he winked.
I mocked being surprised. “So we can become internet official? Maybe you should be backward while I be forward.”
I tilted his head toward the back porch, a huge smile on his face while he tugged me along. The sun was setting along the lake, and the colors of the sky would make for a killer background. He guided me to the railing facing the house, then moved his body to my side, only facing the lake. I laughed and held up my phone, resting my head on his shoulder while he tipped his damn hat low over his forehead, tilting it so he was resting it against mine, only in the opposite direction. I was smiling like an idiot, while only the back of Jake’s head, his hat covering the sexy hair that I loved.
Snapping a few photos, I showed them to Jake.
“Can we get more of my back? I can’t see my logo,” he joked, and I smacked his arm.
“You should put it on your hat,” I teased messing with the bill of it with my hand.
He smiled, crooking his head to kiss me on the cheek. “Send those photos to me, will you?”
“Wow, so we both can go viral!” I laughed.
He shrugged his shoulders, cuddling me to his chest. “All I care about is your up and coming book. You think our readers will make the connection?”
“Mine will investigate after they read it,” I confessed. “Then they’ll stalk your pretty backside,” I grinned, reaching around and squeezing his taut behind.
“Then mine will do the same once they see this hot chick on my page.”
“Only if you tag me,” I winked.
“Haven’t decided,” he sighed. “I’ve got some weirdos on there that I’m not sure I want to ogle you.”
I rolled my eyes again, resting my head against his chest. He hugged me, kissing my forehead and resting his chin against my temple. Jake made me uncharacteristically happy, bringing out everything within me I was afraid to feel and let consume me. He was amazing, and I was so grateful I took the leap of faith to fly across the world and see him.
I loved him, and would forever. We were content and thrilled to start our lives together. No drama or baggage. Our lives were out in the open to each other. No more secrets or dangerous pasts to wedge between us.
I had finally found my happily ever after.
