The Moor (DCI Ryan Mysteries, #11)(83)

The character of ‘Samantha’ came to me one day after watching the old movie, Oliver! and I began to imagine a little girl who shared some characteristics with the Artful Dodger, albeit to a much lesser degree. I hope that I have been able to channel some of his loyalty and playfulness through the new character of Samantha, whilst sketching out a better life for her than Dodger was forced to lead.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, LJ Ross moved to London where she graduated from King’s College London with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Law. After working in the City as a regulatory lawyer for a number of years, she realised it was high time for a change. The catalyst was the birth of her son, which forced her to take a break from the legal world and find time for some of the detective stories that had been percolating for a while and finally demanded to be written.

She lives with her husband and young son in her beautiful home county of Northumberland.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Moor is the twelfth book in my DCI Ryan Mysteries, and the ninth of my books to have captured the coveted Number One spot in the Amazon chart in the United Kingdom. I am often asked whether the process of writing and releasing a new book has lost some of its verve, now that I have a good number beneath my belt. However, I can say, very emphatically, that this is never the case. Each time I begin to write a new book, there is a frisson of excitement at where the story might take me, and returning to characters I have grown to love is always a joy.

None of this would have been possible without the love and unstinting support of my family, and in particular my husband, James. The “J” in “LJ” is taken from his name as a permanent ‘thank you’ for the part he played (and continues to play) in making my writing dream a reality.

I am grateful also to the many readers, book bloggers and bibliophiles who have read and enjoyed my stories and have been kind enough to recommend them to others. I never underestimate the value of your kindness and goodwill, and I am thankful to every one of you.

Finally, I would like to thank my five-year-old son, Ethan, for being wonderful. Now that he is a proficient reader himself, he is growing curious about the ‘grown up’ books that his mummy writes, and it would not surprise me to find him leafing through the pages of a DCI Ryan novel in years to come. In the event that he manages to scale the bookshelf to nab a copy of this before he reaches the appropriate age, I’ll take this opportunity to tell him that the Secret Seven collection is an excellent alternative until he is ready to go on a journey of discovery with Ryan and Co.
