ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The Infirmary is the eleventh DCI Ryan novel I have written but its storyline is a prequel to the series. As such, it was an interesting and enjoyable experience to cast my mind back in time to 2014 and to the fictional events preceding the events in Holy Island. It was a creative challenge to write and I hope you have enjoyed reading it, discovering Ryan and Co. as they were before many of the events that subsequently shaped and moulded their characters.
I am grateful to all my family and friends who have offered unstinting support throughout my journey as a writer and whose love has sustained me during intense periods of writing during which time I am less sociable and more like a grizzly bear than usual (the difference may be marginal). In particular, I am thankful to my husband, James, who is always on hand to lend a patient ear and read my manuscript, to be encouraging and unfailingly positive which is one of the many reasons I love him.
I would also like to thank Doctor Alexandra Baker, Doctor Waleed and Mary El-Kinini, not only for their friendship but for offering very useful terminology and advice which I put to good use during the scenes in the Emergency Medicine Department of the fictional hospital. They, and many others like them, are shining examples of why I’m grateful to have such highly-skilled and compassionate people working for our shared National Health Service.
