Maggie Moves On(75)
He was still naked and an absolute delight to look at. She hadn’t really appreciated the view, being distracted by all those orgasms and all. His tattoo stood out on his left arm, as did the dark tan line at his waist.
“You’re really gorgeous,” she said, accepting the glass he handed her.
He gave her a wolfish smile. “It speaks to your intelligence that you noticed.”
“Where does all that confidence come from?” she asked. “Is it from looking like that?”
“Darlin’, I’m surprised at you. Don’t you know confidence comes from the inside?”
“Does it? Because from where I sit, you’ve got an awful lot to feel confident about on the outside,” she said, eyeing his muscular thighs and what hung between them.
He sat down on the mattress next to her and gave her bare hip a friendly squeeze. “Confidence comes from knowing that whatever the situation, you know you’ll make the best of it. Confidence is certainty in your ability to rise.”
Her philosophical landscaper lover.
He took the phone from her. “No screens in the bedroom.”
“What if there’s an emergency?”
“Then you’ll find out about it in the morning,” he said, ushering her toward the waiting shower.
“Hey. We found gold today.”
He gave her an affectionate slap on the ass. “It was a really good day, Mags.”
Dayana: Thanks to you and your beach bungalow kid’s room, Keaton now wants bunk beds.
Maggie: He has good taste.
Dayana: I think I know where he gets it. Spoiler Alert: It’s not me. Any recommendations for how to keep him in the bed and not falling out of it?
Maggie: Have you considered duct tape?
Dayana: Only every day of his life. Question. What’s the real estate market like in mostly rural Idaho?
Maggie: Why?

Blaire and Morris’s house was a brick two-story on a quiet block at the southern end of Kinship. Cody and Dean climbed out of Maggie’s truck and stood on the sidewalk, eyeing the house. Music and voices, a lot of them, carried over the backyard fence.
“Okay. Let’s review the game plan,” Maggie said, joining them. “These family things can run long and get awkward.”
“How would you know?” Dean demanded, crossing his arms. “My family get-togethers are always delightful.”
“Are you forgetting that time your aunt Lacey accused her sister of trying to make out with her date to Thanksgiving? There’s always a crazy mother-in-law. Or a cousin who picks pockets. Or the creepy uncle.” Or the stepmother who hated her stepdaughter’s very existence. Or the reluctant father who was too busy running an empire to care about the twelve-year-old he never wanted.
“My mom’s last family reunion ended early because three of her uncles got arrested fighting over how to grill hot dogs,” Cody added.
“See?” she said smugly to Dean. “Okay, boys. How long are we staying?”
“Ninety minutes or the shortest amount of time to still be considered polite,” Cody answered.
She gave him an approving nod. “Great. Is everyone armed with their excuses?”
“Finishing touches for tomorrow’s episode,” Dean answered with a beleaguered sigh.
“Science test to study for,” Cody said.
“I need to catch up on all the stuff I didn’t do this weekend,” Maggie added. “And if none of those excuses work?”
“The kittens,” Dean and Cody responded together.
“‘Go, team,’ on three,” she said, putting her hand out. The guys added their hands. “One. Two. Three.”
“Go, team!”
Maggie tried to ignore the stumble her heart took when Silas met them at the gate.
“Hey, guys. Mags,” he said softly. That achingly familiar naughty smile played on his lips.
She was crushing on the guy she was sleeping with. The guy who was determined to make her stay. Things were going to get ugly.
As if he read her mind, he pulled her in for a soft kiss. Kevin gave a joyful bark.
“Mom! Sy’s got his tongue down a girl’s throat,” Maggie heard Nirina say from the backyard.
“Ooooh!” came the family chorus.
Silas pulled back, grinning. “Ignore them. They’re all jerks.”
He shook Dean’s hand and then gave Cody a slap on the shoulder. “Glad you could make it. My mom heard that you’re a fan of potato salad, so she made a quadruple batch.”
“Really?” Cody looked embarrassed and thrilled at the same time. It made Maggie’s heart hurt for him. Groceries. She would fill that empty kitchen to the ceiling with them. She’d already hit Buy It Now on a big-ass TV and bracket for the room across from her office. She’d ask Nirina where she could get a couch.
“Really. Come on back.” Silas led the way, his fingers casually linking through hers. Affection in front of family seemed like they were careening toward a finish line she didn’t want to cross.
Big shade trees lined the back of the property. A large deck with a double set of sliding doors held a spiffy grill and a long farm table. It stepped down onto a brick patio lined by raised flower beds with structured plantings. The grass was cut on a precise diagonal.
