Dragon's Storm (Legion Of Angels #4)(81)

Basanti and I looked at each other, then ran to catch up to them. Colonel Fireswift was gone! Now that was something to celebrate.

“It looks like your news took a backseat to this,” Basanti said.

“Oh, no. Everyone is still talking about that,” Ivy assured us, grinning. “Personally, I’m hoping the new angel in charge is the old angel in charge.”

Nero come back? I wished for that too, even knowing it was impossible. It couldn’t be. He was headed back to LA.

But what if it were possible? What if Nyx had given him his old job back? She’d mentioned a new assignment for him, an assignment he’d like. I couldn’t imagine anything he’d enjoy more than to be back here with us.

My phone hummed. I answered on the first ring.

“Leda,” Nero’s voice said. The background buzz sounded familiar. Were those the same cheers I heard echoing through these halls?

“Where are you?” I asked with tentative optimism.

“Back in New York. Headed for Demeter. I was hoping you would join me for lunch.”

My heart was thumping so fast in my chest, it couldn’t be good for my health. “Definitely.”

“Then I’ll see you soon.” He hung up.

I’d reached the canteen. A thick crowd blocked the way in. I slipped past them, propelled by my excitement to see Nero again. I could feel him close, so close now. I had to see him. To sit at the table with him and tell him my silly jokes. To fall asleep in his arms every night. To wake up with him every morning. To even have him kick my ass in training, day after day after day. Just to be together.

We’d only been apart for a few hours, but those hours had made me realize that was what I wanted. The joke I’d made about living together, it suddenly wasn’t so funny. Maybe it was too fast. Maybe this mating thing was making me crazy. But that’s what I wanted. And I was going to tell him just that.

As I moved toward the main table, I reminded myself that I couldn’t throw myself in his arms and kiss him in front of everyone. The Legion still had its decorum, its rules and procedures. I would be perfectly dignified. I would not sit on his lap and feed him fries while making dorky cutesy noises.

My steps hastened. I was racing now, so excited to see him. Screw decorum. It was so seriously overrated. I looked at the main table. Nero wasn’t there. No one was. Everyone had gathered in the center of the room, where the tables had been cleared away to make room for a platform. High above this spot, the points of the gigantic star in the glass ceiling slid apart. Warm, golden light spilled inside. A black and blond shape shot down, landing on the platform in a crouch. Slowly, his dark wings spread open, black with bright brilliant blue accents.

My heart sank when I realized it wasn’t Nero at all. The angel rose from the ground. Shock trailed surprise when I saw his face. It was Harker. Harker was an angel now.

“Legion soldiers of New York,” he said. “By order of the First Angel, I am taking command of this facility.”
